Spike Hughes was a musician, both classical and jazz, a composer and a writer who wrote serious works, mostly about opera, as well as comedy and cookery books. His autobiography was published in two parts, Opening Bars (1946) and Second Movement (1951) – before he even embarked on the Coarse books.
