The subtitle of “How to fill in the gaps between the holidays” neatly sums up the writer’s attitude to teaching.
The book is set in Bogsworth Secondary Modern School, even though by this time this type of school had been phased out in most parts of the UK. I think the book makes a good case for their closures!
Somewhat of a cuckoo in the nest, this was the only Coarse book published by Leslie Frewin, and I’d love to know if the publication was welcomed by Hutchinson and Co, who were responsible for the rest of the series at this time. There is no record of any other books by the author (assuming that’s his real name), but he makes a good attempt at recreating the style of Michael Green’s writing.
